(Do I or Don’t I) Swine Flu Vaccination in Pregnancy?
I’m 18 weeks pregnant with my 2nd child. I have read so much regarding Swine Flu I just don’t know what to believe or what to put my trust in.
I’m petrified about the whole birth defects stories I’ve read on The Guardian website. I’ve read on numerous websites that the jab is safe to have in pregnancy however have also read some horror stories. I just don’t know where I stand and what to do for the best. Can anyone tell me if they have had the jab already and what your views are on this matter. Thank You in advance x
I see the anti-vaccine militia are out in full force today.
In my opinion, yes, you should have it. What you have to remember is that newspapers want to sell a story and need to grab peoples attention to do so, much of what they do amounts to fear-mongering in my opinion.
Most of the claims made by the anti-vaccine crew are based on information that isn’t credible and does not stand up to Scientific scrutiny- User ‘Pindar’ is a class example of this.
May I ask, what horror stories you are referring to?
This vaccine has been produced using the same methods and similar time scale as the seasonal flu vaccines that are produced every year to tackle the current strain of flu that has evolved that year. The only difference is that this vaccine has been added with the H1N1.
The H1N1 prototype vaccines have been clinically tested and shown to produce good immune system responses, and have a good safety profile. The insertion of the H1N1 strain into the vaccine should not affect the safety of the vaccine, the same as the annual modifications to the seasonal flu vaccine do not compromise safety. There is no reason why this vaccine should be unsafe.
The Committee for Medicinal Products for Human Use (CHMP) has given a clear recommendation that the vaccine can be given safely to pregnant women.
There is no evidence that this vaccine will cause any harm to pregnant women or their unborn baby. Every year, the seasonal flu vaccine is given to pregnant women who are at risk of seasonal flu and as I stated above, the seasonal vaccine is produced in exactly the same way and is given to pregnant women.
Nothing in medicine is 100% but the benefits outweigh the rare risks.
